Description

What is a Nanoemulsion?

A nanoemulsion is a formulation in which two substances that normally would not mix are made miscible through the use of a surfactant and high-sheer mechanical stress. In the case of Star Hill Hemp Nanoemulsions, shear stress is applied using high intensity  ultrasonic waves to induce cavitation within the oil-in-water mix. Sheering causes small droplets of oil phase (cannabinoids, terpenes, and carrier oil) to form around non-ionic silver particles. Surfactants, which are molecules that are attracted to both water and oils, self-assemble around these tiny droplets, making them stable while allowing them to remain suspended evenly throughout the water phase.

Bioavailability

Not only are nanoemulsions capable of being evenly dispersed in water and beverages; they are also more bioavailable than other modes of ingestion such as edibles and vapes, and facilitate rapid uptake and onset of effects. Consider the common edible form of CBD, which includes tinctures; these have a very slow uptake that can extend beyond two hours with only 4% – 12% actually getting into the body. Vaping allows around 30% of the inhaled CBD to enter the bloodstream within a few minutes. Nanoemulsions, in stark contrast, allow 70% – 100% of the CBD or other cannabinoid to enter and be utilized by the body within 15 – 20 minutes of ingesting. In short, a 10mg dose of nanoemulsion is about equal in effect to a 100mg edible, or vaping 30mg of distillate. This basically translates to more value for the end user.

Recommended directions
